Garden Salad

One of the problems with a vegetable garden is having to eat what you grow. We’d been hitting the romaine and red lettuces hard and the chard was ready. So, I harvested the huge succulent leafs, removed the stems and made a couple of salads.

We love cilantro, so I gave it a haircut and added the leaves.

The basil needed trimming, so I added those leaves.

We enjoy the Thai combo of clilantro and mint, it grows like a weed here, so I added some of that.

The chives were blooming, so in they went.

The thyme and marjoram needed trimming, so I added those.

I had some jalapenos in the fridge. Why not?

I also added bell pepper, carrots, celery, tomato, vidalia and feta.

I baked some breaded tilapia from Costco and served it with the salads.

The Wife dressed hers with Ranch while I went for Italian, making for totally diff experiences. Upon reflection, Ginger Soy seems the better choice.

It was, to say the least, very aromatic. For me, the cilantro and basil predominated and I never discerned the mint or chive, save for the blooms, which took your head off. I’m not sure about the marjoram, but the thyme seemed a really bad idea.

Unbelievably, we gave it an unreserved thumbs up, overall.

The oregano isn’t quite ready and I forgot to sample our rosemary bush. Maybe next time.

Either the cukes or the zukes are growing at a frightening rate. The green beans are coming along, and I’ve put a growing fence around the tomatoes.

BTW, I’m late with broccoli, but it’s sprouted and we’re waiting on the spinach.

Washing the greens is fun. Without close inspection, I would’ve served bugs and slugs. It’s very possible some got by me.

And I’ve got two mystery plants, stevia and lavender. I think the Wife has plans for the latter and the former has been left to me.

Ok, stevia is like growing pot, except you get a sugar substitute. No worries, mate.

A word is warranted regarding physical effect. I’d enjoyed unpleasant digestion twice before after eating chard, raw and cooked. I felt for a few minutes as though things weren’t going to go well, but I finally settled down. I played it safe by not taking my Metformin. So far today, I feel fine. Even without her gallbladder, the Wife has the constitution of a petroleum refinery and was of no concern.

The arugula also got a trim. I washed the leaves and put them aside. The Wife will pawn them off on some poor soul or throw them away. We’ll make another attempt at eating it, but last night wasn’t the time.

The Wife’s climbing red rose bush has around 100 blooms on it. With the daisies, lillies and hosta, the pots and planters and the raised beds, the Wife comes home, goes outside and enjoys a glass of very inexpensive Pinot Grigio before dinner. The cats are staying out of the beds, but the frequent rain fostered a bounty of mosquitoes. Even so, the garden is idyllic.

If all goes right, in a month we’ll have big bowls of pepper, onion, cucumber and tomato, dressed in salt, black pepper, cider vinegar and herbs.
