Before anyone diagnoses me as bi-polar, I must reiterate that I despise Christmas. Kids enjoy it and they can have it. I suppose it’s as good an excuse as any to get together with friends and family. Still, it’s a sham.

In the interest of continuing my horrible behavior, I’d like to predict that the new Mellow Mushroom downtown will fail within a year:

Mellow Mushroom (609 S. Elm St., Greensboro; 235-2840; www.mellowmushroom.com/greensboro) has now opened in downtown Greensboro.

The franchise, located in the former TwoArtChicks space, is owned by Jim and Cindy Waters, and with its opening, the chain has come a long ways from the pie shop of the early 1970s. The new restaurant is an eclectically sophisticated showcase of contemporary design.

I’ve eaten at the Atlanta Mellow Mushrooms several times over the years. Big deal. Let me try to explain the problem: Greensboro is not Atlanta; neither is it Winston-Salem. The reality is the “be hip or die” crowd in GSO does not exist in sufficient numbers to support a restaurant serving $22 pies tasting like the bottom of an aquarium. I know Richard Florida says the “creative class” downtown wants one, but this overwrought shit will not fly.

The 100 or so of you sporting overpriced eyewear and tooling about town in your Audis and Saabs can eat every fucking meal there. It will still close by next Christmas. Instead, why don’t you catch the next flight to anywhere and leave us normal folks be? Or stick around and continue to provide excellent entertainment.

    $22 pies

You’re being generous with the ‘within in a year’, I’d surmise. Unless it’s a money laundering front, of course.

No, it’s fools being separated from their money.

From Kansas you can’t tell it, but the location is across the railroad tracks from the established downtown restaurant district.

My daddy always told me you can tell the pioneers by the arrows in their backs.

  3. RBM says:

Yup, that pioneer stuff is hard.

I’m getting a taste of how hard in my job search. The area I’m really, really interested in, is arguably, in the pioneer phase of development.

I thought you just got an Associates degree in HVAC? We had an HVAC repairman who did classified military work at absolute zero. He did a hell of a job on the air conditioning.

It’s the naming of the restaurant that seals its doom– the old hippies who can afford store bought ’srooms left town years ago. The rest of us poor old hippies are forced to grow and cook our own.

Maybe, in a few years we can pool our money and buy-up downtown Greensboro just like the Bobbleheads and the Perkinites did before. Then we can get the city to back our wild schemes in the name of “saving our downtown.”

Good luck with that. I just think it’s a sin to dupe foreigners into the downtown shell game.

Oh, yeah – I’m officially unemployed with a recently earned AAS in HVAC/R.

The kids mostly all got traditional jobs in residential/commercial install/service markets.

My traditional search is in building/facilities management. My non-traditional (read pioneer) is in what’s called ‘home energy rater’ job’s.

As I watched Ben Hur last night I noticed for the umpteenth time that the people who designed the lighting for the scenes were long dead and that art was lost. Similarly, we can’t bring back furniture or textile manufacturing as the folks who knew how to set up the machines are no longer with us.

You sound like a good candidate for a home inspector. I understand that’s a booming profession.

as a member of the destructive class, i have observed that the creative class creates more excrement than any other class. while the creative class believes their excrement lacks the fetid quality present in the excrement of the destructive class, i can assure you that it lacks the fingerpaint quality that the creative class claims it possesses. this is the opinion of both the leading experts and the following experts.

    Richard Florida is a dumbass.
