Greensboro is Dying

The Wife and I painted the door and railing in front of her store on Sunday. While we waited for the first coat to dry, we repaired to the Ham’s at Brassfield for cheap beer and wings. The section of the shopping center is replete with vacant store fronts. And now we learn of Ham’s bankruptcy.

We eat out about once a week, usually at high value places like Elizabeth’s Pizza, Ham’s or Vietnamese Garden Cuisine. I get take out for lunch about once a week at one of the restaurants nearby. We cherish these places. Right now, I’m finishing a Classic Italian pizza from Villa Italian on Lawndale. The truth is I can’t cook food as good for the same price.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to our town as things get worse, but I believe patronizing businesses we care about is part of the solution. I think it’s important to recognize locally owned stores and do business with them, lest all that remain are Food Lions, Harris-Teeters and Wal Marts.

Ham’s over-extended itself. So did the Chop House. Hopefully, they can work through their problems and survive. I also got a great hair cut today at Leon’s. God forbid I should have to rely upon Great Clips.

“The truth is I can’t cook food as good for the same price.”

Go to Super G’s on West Market and buy:

    2 squash
    1 zuch
    1 bunch green onions
    1 pack bean sprouts
    1 pack Thai Basil
    1 bottle of Oyster Sauce

Then using chicken or firm tofu(cheap at Super G). Brown chicken or fry tofu.

Put oil in large skillet, turn it up loud, toss in chopped veggies (only use a handful of the sprouts) and stir fry in the oil until they get some brown on them and are cooked to your liking. Just before they finish add in the Thai basil and let it wilt. Add in soy sauce, garlic power, fried chicken or tofu, turn down heat and pour on the Oyster Sauce.

I think it’s a thai-viet fusion thing but whatever it is you will love it. Oyster Sauce is Asian ketchup. Add some chili paste for volcanic activity.

    Cheap eats.

And speaking of Great Clips. I got clipped there last week and had a huge boil come up on the back of my neck at the exact spot where the razor buzzed me. Coincidence?

I could not agree more. The question should be WHY? The bulk of the blame goes to the Greensboro City Council. What have they done to replace the manufacturing jobs we have lost in the last few years? NOTHING. They, the Council have practiced their Political Correctness. This has resulted in the worst situation Greensboro has ever been in. They are so blind that most of them do not even see the problem correctly. The shame is that very little will change with this election. I will bet anyone that in two more years and another election, things will be worse in Greensboro. I am an optimist but I have no confidence in idiots.

Thanks a bunch. I made hot and sour soup last night. We love thai food. Part of my problem is I never get the pan hot enough for great stir fry. I could do it on the gas grill outside.

RE Great Clips, when you look like me, you need all the help you can get. I’ve found someone at Leon’s who consistently does a great job, sans boils.

Wayne, I share your lack of confidence in Cowncil and I’m not sure young Mr. Young is ready for what’s coming. Gary Nixon seems a great alternative, but the vaunted Nancy Vaughan is completely unprepared to govern.

I ate at Ham’s once when I first moved here. The one at the Palladium Movie Theater in High Point, to be specific. I was a little dissapointed, as it was no better than Applebee’s or Ruby Tuesday’s. I guess if I want that type of food, I’d go to Ham’s since it’s local. I just don’ t like the “fried food with cheese” menus.

Off topic but thought you’d find it amusing:

That’s rich. Of course, he’s a Republican and keeps a Pink Floyd and a Steely Dan in his SUV, just in case.
