The Ghost of Tom Joad

I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving. The Wife and I will be traveling to Raleigh to celebrate with her twin sister and their three children home from college. There will be lots to eat and we’ll be warm and happy.

But I’ll be thinking about a woman and her small child huddled in a trailer, trying to get through the holiday without their husband and father, lying in jail for passing bad checks.

Do what you want to me; I can take it. Hell, I enjoy it. Bearing witness to the suffering of the least of us is what I’m thankful for and I will not forget. A struggle wages out there beyond our worst nightmares and it continues in subsequent generations. I looked at that child wanting its daddy and saw Hell On Earth.

I cannot fathom a God who would allow such injustice. Perhaps it’s people such as those who exist to motivate the rest of us to make things better. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be looking for another ass to chew soon enough.

11-26-09 22:00: I-40 East in Burlington was strewn with rear end crashes around lunch. Later, I taught a gorgeous eighteen year old girl how to make turkey gravy sans giblets. The meal was perfect with de rigueur green bean and sweet potato casseroles. I had a few Yuenglings beforehand. On the way home, I stopped for a small Sugar Free Red Bull and arrived safely.

The mother-in-law was in Bermuda with her husband’s family. Therefore, drama was completely avoided. The brother-in-law likes Palin and Beck, but wasn’t rude about it, so we got along fine. I mentioned my intention not to read Going Rogue and he got the message. Sadly, at least one of his progeny is a dedicated liberal.

We’d foregone dessert for second helpings, so we ate our chocolate cake while watching Survivor. The Wife is over the moon about TWC‘s On Demand channels and is catching up on her fave episodes.
